China's Trade Official Says Government will Follow WTO Rules
MON, NOV 05, 2001
Chief trade negotiator Long Yongtu says the Chinese government will strictly follow the World Trade Organisation rules after the country's scheduled entry later this month. Long Yongtu has underscored the government's behaviour, saying it should create a more independent environment for Chinese enterprises.

Long Yongtu made his latest remarks on China's historic entry into the WTO at an international enterprises forum in Shanghai on Sunday.

Long Yongtu says the WTO rules ask the government to discipline its behaviour with regard to economic activities.

According to the Chinese chief trade negotiator, the government should reduce its direct influence over enterprises that have the right to decide what to produce and the quantity.

Long Yongtu says enterprises should also be encouraged to supervise the government's role, as China is in the process of building a market economy.

He says China's entry into the WTO will help improve the transparency of national laws, which will be beneficial to the independent development of enterprises.
