Taiwan's Business Outlook After Mainland's WTO Entry
TUE, NOV 06, 2001
As China's entry into the WTO approaches, Taiwan businesses are expecting great opportunities on the Chinese mainland. But in spite of the growing excitement, they are worried about whether the favorable policies they have long been enjoying will continue. Xin Hui tells us about the benefits and challenges Taiwan businesses are facing.

According to WTO rules, the Chinese mainland will treat all investors equally. As a result, some of the favorable policies towards Taiwan region will have to be abolished.

But Taiwan businesses will still have more opportunities to develop in the mainland. As the mainland market further opens up, tariffs are lowered and the export environment is improved, Taiwan businesses can invest in more fields than ever, especially in the tertiary industry.

Facing the challenges from overseas investors, some Taiwan businessmen remain optimistic. They are confident that because people from both sides of the Taiwan Straits are Chinese, they share the same cultural background and the same ideas, even in doing business.

By the end of June this year, over 48 thousand Taiwan enterprises had been permitted to start up on the Chinese mainland, thanks to favorable policies. Experts are expecting a new wave of Taiwan investment in the Chinese mainland after the country's WTO entry, despite the new challenges they might have to face.
