Alaska Governor Sarah Palin -- Republican John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year -- says she will resign from office later this month. Some analysts say the unexpected move could signal a run for higher office. But others question whether her decision is a smart political move.

During a brief news conference on Friday, Palin gave no indication of her future plans. She said she is not seeking re-election and that she will transfer authority to Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell in three weeks. Palin said her decision came after much consideration.

She also said she did not want to waste time on what she calls "political blood sport". Instead, she says she has decided to work outside of government for change. Palin was John McCain's surprise pick in the 2008 presidential race.
