In Bolivia, President Evo Morales condemned the military action, describing it as an adventure by a group of soldiers who have assaulted democracy.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez put his military on alert.
Speaking during an Organization of American States meeting, Secretary-General Jose Insulza also condemned the military action and called for a restoration of constitutional order.
