The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees says the bloody conflict in Somalia has created the world's largest refugee camp. According to local hospital sources, fighting which broke out in early May has displaced nearly 170 thousand people. Five hundred refugees pour into a wind-swept camp in neighboring Kenya every day, deepening a humanitarian crisis.

Dadaab is just 80 kilometers from the Somali border. It was meant to hold 90 thousand people, but is home to more than 280 thousand refugees.

So far this year, the UN refugee agency has registered nearly 38 thousand new arrivals.

Most are fleeing violence and poverty in Somalia.

In less than two months, fighting between Islamist insurgents and government forces in the capital, Mogadishu, has killed OVER 250 people, and displaced nearly 170 thousand.

Overcrowding has become a massive problem in the Dadaab camp.

Despite the remote location near to the border with Somalia, there is also a problem getting more land for the crowded camp.

The United Nations says an estimated 3.2 million Somalis, almost half the country's population, need food and other aid.

Somalia has not had an effective government since 1991. The lawlessness also allows Somali pirates to flourish, making the country the world's worst piracy hotspot.
