A US destroyer was on its way to the Seychelles on Monday after visiting the Kenyan port of Mombasa on a training mission aimed at improving the region's maritime safety and security.

The USS Arleigh Burke is touring the region as part of the Africa Partnership Station initiative, which was developed by the US Navy.

The ship's training teams have been working with local partners with search and rescue training and maintenance.

The journey takes the USS Arleigh Burke close to Somali waters, where pirates have carried out a number of attacks in recent months.

The ship's commanding officer said his crew would respond to an act of piracy if necessary.
