As of 2004 , Majid Majidi was the only Iranian director who had ever been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film : his breakthrough came with the film Children of Heaven in 1998 .

Majidi has directed three other feature films since Children of Heaven : The Colour of Paradise ( 2000 ), Baran ( 2001 ), and The Willow Tree ( 2005 ), whose alternative English title was One Life More ). He also directed a feature-length documentary, Barefoot to Herat which chronicled the lives of people living in refugee camps and the city of Herat during and after the anti-Taliban offensive began in 2001.

Majidi received the Asian Film Culture Award at the Fifth Third-Eye Film Festival in Mumbai in October 2005 in recognition of his efforts to popularize Asian cinema and his artistic achievements in cinematography.

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has added the English screenplay of Majidi's Children of Heaven to high school textbooks.
