Number four seed Dementieva started well and broke in the first game for a 1-0 lead.
Williams responded with a break of her own in the next game and made it 3-3 in tiebreak. But the two-time former champion made four mistakes continously before Dementieva won the resulting tiebreaker 7-4.
Dementieva was still in fine form in the second set. In a fierce 11th game, the Russian's forehand netball was regarded as "in", and williams asked for a review. The eye-ball?? told that it was out, so the American took a key point before she seved out to take it 7-5 and levell the match.
