The Guangzhou municipal government will regulate hotel prices in the city during the 16th Asian Games from November 12 to 27, 2010. The price ceiling for a double room in a five-star hotel is to be US$ 200 per day, the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee (GAGOC) announced yesterday.

About 40,000 athletes and guests from 45 countries and regions, as well as 3 million visitors, are expected to visit Guangzhou during the Asian Games.

Designated hotels must follow pricing standards set by the government: a double room in a four-star hotel should not cost more than US$150 per night, and US$110 for a three-star hotel, said Tang Ruping, an official from the GAGOC. For a single room, the price ceiling for five-star hotels is US$150, and respectively US$110 for four–star hotels and US$90 for three-star hotels.

Taking into account that budget hotels are very popular among visitors, a pricing structure will also be worked out to regulate these hotels, said Tang.

All designated hotels will be subject to examination. Those that do not pass the examination or can not improve before a set deadline will be disqualified.

24 of the 60 designated hotels are planning upgrades in order to improve their services.
