The China stop of the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup began in Beijing on Friday. In the women's 1000 meter competition, China's Wang Meng and her teammate cruised to the quarter final with ease. But on the men's side in the same event, Li Ye was the only one out of three to make it to the next round.

In the women's 1000 meter competition, Zhang Hui of China finished with the best result of the day in the event at 1 minute 32.632 seconds. In the same event on the men's side, Li Ye made it to the next round with a top spot in the group, while Han Jialiang and Song Weilong followed in third and fourth. China made it to the quarter finals in the women's 3000m and the men's 5000m relay. Liu Qiuhong, Wang Meng and Fu Tianyu will also compete in the quarter finals of the women's 500 meter speed skating event.

Team coach said, "We hope that our athletes will go all out and take each competition seriously right from the start. From what we saw of their initial competitions, they fared normally."
