The Chinese wildcard, ranked 133rd in the world before the tournament, rattled off five games in a row to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final at Wimbledon. Zheng ousted Szavay with this spectacular groundstroke after a long rally.

Zheng Jie said "After I reached the last 8, I'm feeling more confident on grass. And I hope I can also do a good job in the women's doubles."

Jankovic, Kuznetosva out

Meanwhile, unseeded Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn stunned second seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-2 to cause another shock. Russian fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was another casualty when she lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to 19-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

As the highest women's seed remaining, Elena Dementieva breezed into the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Shahar Peer of Israel. Four-time champion Venus Williams swept into the quarter-finals with an impressive display against Russian teenager Alisa Kleybanova winning 6-3, 6-4. Her sister Serena Williams produced her best display to wallop Bethanie Mattek 6-3, 6-3 in their all-American fourth round match.

Wins for Federer, Nadal

On the men's side, Roger Federer came out on top in the battle of the Wimbledon champions when he trumped Lleyton Hewitt 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last eight. Rafael Nadal survived an early scare when he needed treatment to his right calf before beating Russian 17th seed Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.

Mario Ancic set-up a quarter-final clash against Federer when he came from two sets down to beat Fernando Verdasco in three hours and 48 minutes. Russian veteran Marat Safin beat Stanislas Wawrinka. And Andy Murray defeated Richard Gasquet.
