Special report: Olympic flame atop world´s highest summit

For the first time, Chinese climbers have successfully brought the Olympic torch to the world's highest peak. Vice President Xi Jinping sent his congratulations to the Chinese mountaineers who carried the Olympic flame to the top of Mount Qomolangma. Xi Jinping says holding the Olympics is a century-old dream of the Chinese nation.

The General Administration of Sport of China, and the Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee also sent their congratulations.

The lantern carrying the Olympic flame for the Beijing Games was carried to the top of the mountain at 9:00 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday. Norbu Zhamdu lit the torch with a specially designed lighter at 9:11.

The relay on Mt. Qomolangma started with Gyigyi as the first torchbearer. Gyigyi then walked over to the second torchbearer Wang Yongfeng, a member of the backup team.

Nyima Cering, captain of the 12-member Attack Team, was the third torchbearer. He hollered out the Beijing Olympic motto, before passing the flame to Huang Chungui.

The fifth and last torchbearer, Cering Wangmo, stood on the peak with her torch while other 18 team members unfurled Chinese, Olympic, and Beijing Olympic flags.

Clustered together at the summit, all 12 members of the Attack Team and seven backup climbers cheered.
