The Euro2008 tournament kicks off in June. The two host countries and UEFA, European football's governing body, say they want to make this tournament asenvironmentally friendly as possible.

In June, the Swiss city of Geneva will be topping the travel itinerary of many European football fans as the tournament gets underway. Measures are in place to save energy, manage waste and convince fans to use public transport to travel to Austria and Switzerland. The tournament's organizers hope that fans will keep their feet on the ground and take advantage of public transport deals.

Martin Kallen, Euro 2008 Director, said, "I think that first of all the fans will come to watch football and have fun, but secondly we are offering them the opportunity to use public transport or see things in the host cities. I think this plays a large role and the fans may change their minds and come here in groups and maybe travel here by train."

Christoph Hochfeld, Deputy Director of Institute for Applied Ecology, said, "You can reduce the environmental impact on the climate, on resource consumption, on waste and noise by at least 20 percent if you have an ambitious programme in place."
