Aside from being a sporting event for intellectually challenged athletes, the Special Olympics are also helping to change society, making it better and more tolerant.

The performance of these athletes may not measure up to professional standards. But the audience applause is just as enthusiastic as the response at a top sporting event.

The challenges to the athletes' physical and mental limits are no less than for any other Olympic hopefuls, and that makes these athletes very proud of themselves.
