Special Report:   2008 Olympics Countdown

In Shanghai, the first gold medal of Special Olympic Games has been awarded at the marathon event. The gruelling nature of the event was probably the main reason why there only 23 competitors in the half-marathon in Shanghai, where the temperature reached 31 degrees Celsius.

Nelson James Bass of South Africa led from the start, finally winning the gold in a time 1 hour 26 minutes and 26 seconds, a result that's just 28 minutes slower than the Olympic record.

For the full marathon event, there were even fewer competitors: 6 in all. After 4 hours, Dal Bello of Italy finally reached the finishing line, followed by Yuki Murakami of Japan.
