Alberto Contador has raced ahead of Tour de France leader Michael Rasmussen in a two-man sprint finish to win Sunday's 14th stage. Denmark's Rasmussen has extended his overall advantage, while Cadel Evans has been replaced by Contador in the standings.
Stage 14 covered a course that finished with an ascent- the second of the day's two out of two category climbs.
A four-man breakaway group led the way over the top of the first out of category climb up the pass of Port de Pailheres.
But overall leader Michael Rasmussen and his team-mates led the lead group on the final climb to Plateau de Beille.
Alberto Contador, the leader of the young rider category, kept pace when Rasmussen broke away from his own pursuit group.
Spanish Discovery Team rider Cadel Evans displayed his outstanding climbing ability and made another attack on the punishing ascent.
The attack proved too much for Australian Evans, who finished the day in seventh place, dropping him down to third in the overall standings.
Contador sat on Rasmussen's rear wheel for the run to the finishing line before picking the perfect moment to attack.
Rasmussen tried to keep pace with the sprinting Contador, but his efforts were in vain as the Spaniard cruised to victory.
