Sunday's Grand Prix in Montreal was something of a chaotic affair after a horrific crash on the 27th lap. But it was a good day for McLaren's rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton, who kept his cool to celebrate his first-ever Formula One victory for an eight-point lead in the world championship standings.

Starting in his first-ever pole position, in just his sixth race, the 22-year-old Briton Lewis Hamilton succeeded to become the first black driver to win a grand prix.

In contrast, BMW's Polish driver Robert Kubica was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg after this horrific crash on lap 27.

Hamilton's teammate Fernando Alonso, the double world champion, suffered a miserable day. The Spaniard received a 10-second

stop/go penalty for entering the pit after the safety car had come out, to only finish for seventh place.

Ferrari's title contender Felipe Massa and Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella were disqualified after being black-flagged for exiting the pits on a red light.

Then, after 7-hard-fought laps, Hamilton took the chequered flag to win his first grand prix in his rookie season. And he now leads the standings with 48 points, eight clear of Alonso.

German Nick Heidfeld finished second for BMW Sauber, and Austrian Alex Wurz of Williams taking third place.
