Also securing a semi-final berth is Maria Sharapova, who has defeated fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze in two straight sets.

On the men's side, Roger Federer hasn't fallen off the bandwagon for the title after defeating Spain's Tommy Robredo.

And Chinese player Sun Tiantian and her mixed doubles partner are also through to the semifinals.

Justine Henin, Maria Sharapova into semis

Justine Henin edged out Serena Williams early on following a hard-fought and tightly-contested opening set, which the world number one secured 6-4.

Williams threw her racquet in frustration after losing serve and falling a game down early in the second set.

The 2002 French Open Champion struggled to keep her cool as a clinical Henin took advantage of several unforced errors to close out the match for an 6-4, 6-3 victory.

In another quarterfinal match, world number two and two-time Grand Slam champion, Maria Sharapova took on her compatriot Anna Cakvetadze.

Despite nursing a shoulder injury, Sharapova showed little sign of weakness as she took the opening set 6-3.

In the second set, Sharapova broke serve at 5-4, on her way to serving out the match for a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Roger Federer overcome Tommy Rovredo

On the men's side, Roger Federer took on world number nine, Tommy Robredo. Federer edged past his Spanish opponent to claim a tight opening set 7-5.

Robredo then leveled the match by taking the second set 6-1.

However, Federer went on to take the third 6-1 and broke Robredo three times in the fourth as he powered to a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.
