In women's basketball, defending champions China took on arch rivals Japan in their Group A match at the FIBA Asia Championship in Incheon, South Korea. Despite the two sides looking fairly even at the halfway break, the Japanese ran away with it in the final stages.

China went into the match with a squad mainly from the second team.

The Japanese got off to a flying start with a 7-0 run.

But defending champions China came back strongly. They were led by center Zhang Hanlan, who scored consecutive shots. China ended the first quarter with a 2-point advantage. The two sides then tied at halftime.

The Japanese stood out in the third, taking a commanding lead after a 10-0 run. The Chinese tried to overtake them, but the resulting 5-point deficit gave Japan a win at the final buzzer.
