China's Sui Baoku was the dark horse in the men's 1,500 meter short track speed skating on Monday, putting in a final sprint to take the gold medal. Meanwhile, Jung Eun-Ju of South Korea won the gold in the women's event.

The short track speed skating final was a contest between China and South Korea. A team effort helped China's Sui Baoku surge ahead in the last lap. It was too late for his rivals to do respond the 21-year-old's surprise charge. Sui Baoku clocked two minutes 20.59 seconds, grabbing the gold by a slim margin. South Korean Ahn Hyun-Soo took the silver and another Chinese skater Li Ye won bronze.

Sui Baoku said "My two teammates helped enormously. In the first laps they skated ahead to eat away at most of our rivals' stamina. That allowed me to trail behind and save my energy."

In the women's event, Chinese skater Wang Meng had to settle for bronze.
