China's Wang Fei has claimed the opening victory in the women's 3,000 meter speed skating competition. Her result also breaks the previous Asian record.

In the battle for the first gold of the Games, newly-crowned Asian all-round champion Wang Fei, among the last two to compete, clocked four minutes and 13.08 seconds to win the title, beating the previous Asian record.

The 24-year-old from neighboring Heilongjiang province contributed her victory partly to the familiar home speed skating rink.

Wang Fei said "I was relaxed as I competed in front of home spectators. It is just my day today."

Wang Fei has also qualified for the World Championships Netherlands.

Japan finished in second and third.
