Gordon wins 6th stage in car category

and American Robby Gordon has recorded a surprise stage victory in the cars category, but this hasn't affected Spaniard Carlos Sainz's overall lead. On the motorbikes, Spain's Jordi Viladoms claimed his first success of the Rally. Meanwhile, Chinese drivers Liu Bin and Lu Ningjun both finished the stage successfully.

In the car section, Robby Gordon's imposing Hummer enjoyed the vast open spaces of the desert and its fast tracks.

The American took advantage of a 12th-placed start to pick up his third stage victory and first in Mauritania.

The stage also smiled on the big V8 engine of Jean-Louis Schlesser, who was only 17 seconds behind the day's winner.

South Africa's Giniel de Villiers claimed third place to trim team-mate Carlos Sainz's overall lead to three minutes and 11 seconds.

Chinese drivers finish stage

Meanwhile, the two Chinese drivers both finished the 6th stage successfully. Liu Bin from the Mitsubishi Ralliart completed the race in 13 hours and 28 minutes. He is now ranked 44th in the overall standings.

His compatriot Lu Ningjun completed the race in 13 hours 51 minutes and 30 seconds, and stands at 104th in the overall standings.

Viladoms triumphs in bikes

And in bikes, Jordi Viladoms started the special stage in fourth position. He spent most of the day on his own, with Cyril Despres in his sights, which must have helped him concentrate on his riding.

The 27-year-old engineer triumphed for the first time on the most prestigious of rally-raids.

Viladoms beat his KTM-Repsol team-mate and fellow Spaniard Marc Coma by 57 seconds, with Coma extending his overall lead to 12 minutes and seven seconds over his compatriot, Isidre Esteve.
