Uruguayan forward Dario Silva, who has had a leg amputate after a weekend car crash, is no longer in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Montevideo's Association Espanola Hospital, Mario Cancela head of the Unit told media on Friday.
Silva, 33, will continue treatment in the hospital's intermediate care wards, and is in good spirits, Cancela said, adding that the amputation site was "in good shape, and presents no signs of infection" and that Silva will soon be walking with the aid of crutches.
Doctors removed Silva's right leg below the knee to save his life. The limb was shattered in a serious traffic accident in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Silva, who no longer plays for a professional soccer team, was driving his minivan on a major coastal road in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, when he lost control of the vehicle, left the road and crashed into a lamppost.
His passengers, fellow Uruguayan soccer-players Elbio Pappa and Dardo Pereira, suffered only slight injuries.
Silva played 58 games for Uruguay's national team, scoring 14 goals. He has played for the Uruguayan Defensor Sporting and Penarol; Spanish Espanyol, Malaga and Sevilla; Uruguayan Defensor Sporting and Penarol; and Italian Cagliari. His last team before retiring was England's Portsmouth.
