Scattered among the Wudang Mountains are numerous Taoist temples. Some of them reflect the highest standards reached by Chinese architecture in the past nearly 1,000 years. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Ming Emperor Yongle decided to make the Wudang Mountains the centre of Taoism. He dispatched a senior Taoist named Sun Biyun (孙碧云), to oversee the project.
