The Child Refugees
During the war against the Japanese, many children were left homeless – and in some cases parent-less. It’s estimated that 200,000 Chinese children were killed during the war, and more than 10 million were forced to flee their homes. Such was the scale of the tragedy that there were genuine fears concerning the survival of the entire generation. Well, in the spring of 1938, some of the country’s most prominent women decided to do something about the situation. They founded the China Wartime Childcare Association in Wuhan, with the mission of saving and educating the child refugees. In May 1938, the Association began the mass evacuation of thirty thousand child refugees to the border regions, as far away as possible from the fighting.
