CCTV.com

Happy Chinese, with joy and ease.

  I'm Happy Han Jia.

  And I'm Happy Daniel.

Today, Daniel and I have come

  to Beijing's Zhongshan Park.

What are you doing in a park,

  Han Jia?

Did you forget the theme of

  our Beijing tour?

  Of course not. Dear friends,

The theme of our Beijing tour

  this time

is seeing all of Beijing's Tans.

Yes. First stop, She Ji Tan!

  Where is She Ji Tan?

It's right in the Zhongshan Park.

Han Jia, I've heard of Tian

  Tan, Di Tan, Ri Tan,

  and Yue Tan.

But it's the first time I've

  heard about She Ji Tan.

Doesn't "she ji" refer to nation?

  That's right. "She ji" refers

  to the nation today.

  But originally, it means

  something else.

  What did it mean?

It used to refer to the gods

  of "she" and "ji."

  What? That sounds totally different.

Zhè yě chà de tài yuǎn le ba?

  This isn't quite right.

The god of "she" refers to

  the god of earth.

The god of "ji" refers to

  the god of crops.

  Zhongshan Park's She Ji Tan

was used by emperors of the

  Ming and Qing Dynasties

  to worship the gods of

  "she" and "ji."

  If it originally referred

  to gods,

why did it become a reference

  to nation?

  The ancients believed that

  a nation needed the blessings

  of these gods.

A nation needed a She Ji Tan

  for worshipping.

  Therefore, the term "she ji"

  slowly evolved into a

  reference for nation.

  Oh, that's one big circle.

  We're here. Let's go inside.

When was the She Ji Tan built,

  Han Jia?

  In the Ming Dynasty,

with a history of 580 years.

The second month and the eighth month

  of the lunar calendar,

  Ming and Qing emperors would

  come here

to stage a large scale worship.

  I bet they were praying

  for the gods

  to grant them a peaceful

  and abundant year.

  That's right. Let's go see

  the Five-Colored Soil.

What kind of soil is five-colored?

  This is the Five-Colored Soil,

  Daniel.

It refers to soils of five

  different colors.

Wǔsètǔ zhǐ wǔ zhǒng bùtóng yánsè de tǔ

Wu se tu means five separate soils

  of different colours.

  These five different colors

  correspond to the five directions.

  你看,东边为青色;

  Look, the East is blue;

  西边为白色;南边为红色;

  the West is white; the

  South is red;

the North is black; the Center

  is yellow.

  They were articles of tribute

  to the emperors.

Why did the emperors want them?

Just to decorate She Ji Tan?

  Of course not.

  The emperors put the

  Five-Colored Soil

here to show that the entire

  country belonged to them

  and that he alone ruled

  the entire nation.

  Very insatiable.

  Having seen She Ji Tan,

  I'm taking you to another

  special altar.

  What do you say?

  There are so many altars

  in Beijing.

  Which one are you talking

  about? Di Tan.

  That's the square-shaped Di Tan,

  right there.

  Each Summer Solstice...

Do you know what that is?

  The Summer Solstice? Of course.

The Summer Solstice is the day

  with the longest daytime

  in the entire year.

  Yes. Ming and Qing emperors

  came here to worship the

  god of earth

  on each Summer Solstice.

  I remember that Tian Tan

  has three tiers.

How come there are only two here?

  That's a very good observation.

  Your observations are very careful.

  According to ancient rules

  of worship,

only Tian Tan and She Ji Tan

  had three tiers.

  No others qualify.

I've never heard of that before.

Look, the walls of Di Tan

  are covered with yellow

  glazed tiles.

Is there a reason behind it?

  Of course.

the sky was blue and the

  earth yellow.

That's why Di Tan was made yellow,

  symbolizing the color of earth.

  Yes. Let's go and get

  a feel for it.

Han Jia, standing here, I feel

  extraordinarily tall.

  This is exactly the ingenuity

  of the design.

  It was built to emphasize

  the majesty

  and holiness of the emperor,

the owner and ruler of everything.

  You know, standing here

  really makes me feel like

  an emperor.

  Don't get carried away.

  Countless emperors have come

  and gone.

  All of them now vanished.

  Only this altar remains.

So, only the wisdom of the people

  is eternal.

Where did he learn that line?

  Very philosophical.

  Okay, dear friends. Let's enter

  today's scenery montage next.

  Don't forget our motto:

She Ji Tan, located on the west side of

  Tian An Men,

is where Ming and Qing emperors worshiped

the gods of She and Ji.

Ceremonies were held each year during

  the autumn.

  Prayers for favorable weather and

  abundant harvests.

  Paintings and sculptures

  tell moving and meaningful tales.

Di Tan, also named Fang Ze Tan,

is where Ming and Qing emperors worshiped

  the god of the earth.

Ceremonies were held on the Summer Solstice.
