CCTV.com

  Learn Chinese the fun way.

  It's easy to remember.

Welcome to this edition of Happy China.

  I am Merry Han Jia.

And I am Daniel, brother of the

  happy lion.

Today we are at one of the World

  Cultural Heritage sites,

  the Ming Tombs.

  Why, Han Jia has gone!

  Han Jia, wait for me.

  Han Jia, along Divine Road,

why are there so many huge

  stone sculptures?

They are called Shi Xiang Sheng,

  or stone animals.

  Along this 800-meter-long Divine Road,

there are altogether 36 such statues.

They served as the guard of honor,

  defending the imperial tombs here,

as well as symbols of imperial power.

They also served as road signs.

I don't know how ancient people

  moved these huge stones here.

  Ancient people were very resourceful.

  When it was winter,

they sprinkled water on the ground

  to let it freeze.

Then they put huge stones on boats

and move the boats on the ice.

  That's how they moved these

  huge stones here.

These ancient people were so clever!

  How awe-inspiring this lion is!

Han Jia, do you think I can count

exactly how many teeth this lion has?

  The craftsmanships of ancient

  artisans is so superb!

  It's beyond our imagination.

  There 20 teeth here.

Gǔrén de jìyì chāohū wǒmen de xiǎngxiàng.

The skills of the ancients surpass

  our imaginations.

Han Jia, what an imposing structure!

  What place is it?

  This is Changling,

  the tomb of Emperor Yongle.

It was the first of 13 tombs built here.

Let's go in and have a look.

Han Jia, it's just an emperor's tomb.

But why was it built like a palace?

  Yes, imperial tombs were built

  like palaces

  because emperors believed that

  when they were alive,

  they were paramount rulers and

that they would remain so even

  after death.

So they asked that their food,

  clothing and ornaments

be the same as when they were alive.

  You see. Looking from here,

I feel as if I were looking at a painting.

  You've got a point.

This is exactly what ancient workmen

tried to create in visual effects.

Han Jia, just now you said

  something about "dianzi"?

Yeah, "dianzi" refers to an important point.

  "shuo dao dianzi shang"

means what someone says is correct.

  Hey, what a rare occasion!

  Oh, so she's praising me!

Yuánlái tā zài kuā wǒ ne!

  Oh, so she's praising me!

  Ling'en Hall.

Here's the place where Emperor Yongle's

  memorial altar is enshrined.

  How impressive it is!

There are more amazing things inside.

Let's go over and take a look.

  Let's go.

Wow, what a spacious hall it is!

At least, it would be 800 square

  meters large.

  You underestimated it.

Then how about 1,200 square meters?

  You still underestimated it.

Then I guess it is 1,600 square

  meters large.

  Now you are about right.

But it's still inaccurate. Let me

  tell you straight.

It is nearly 2,000 square meters

  in size.

  2,000 square meters?

  When could I, Daniel,

live in a house which is as

  spacious as this?

Not to mention 2,000 square meters,

  even 200 square meters would

  be enough for me.

Daniel, come over here and look.

This is the statue of Emperor Yongle.

It was he who set up the capital of

  the Ming Dynasty in Beijing.

  The very valuable voluminous work

  in Chinese history, the Yongle

  Encyclopedia,

was also compiled by his order.

He also ... Eh, where is Daniel?

  Where's Daniel?

  Daniel is here.

Han Jia, just now I measured

  these columns here.

  Wow, they are so thick!

Hǎojiāhuo, zhèli de zhùzi zhème cū a!

Wow! The pillars here are so thick!

  These columns

were made of whole nanmu logs.

  The four biggest columns are

  about 23 meters tall each.

nanmu was the best timber for construction.

But as nanmu trees grow in the south,

it would take four to five years to fell

the trees and transport the logs to Beijing.

  Daniel, do you know

  Ling'en Hall is

  the largest extant nanmu structure

  in China?

Then I'd take a closer look at it.

  Daniel, look.

The whole area within a circumference

  of 120 kilometers

is the location of 13 imperial tombs

  of the Ming Dynasty.

  The Ming Dynasty emperors were

  so good at choosing locations.

  Look, the place has mountains

  in the backdrop

and a flatland in the foreground,

with a river flowing in between.

  Now we'd like our audience

to join Daniel and me in enjoying

  the beautiful Ming Tombs.

The Changling Mausoleum is the earliest

and also the largest of all the 13

  imperial tombs.

  Structures on the ground display

  grandeur and pomposity.

  In the magnificent underground palace,

  there are resplendent decorations.

Although the emperor has long been dead,

  the impressive coffin

seems to be recounting his former glories.

The Ming Tombs is deservedly the most

  comprehensive ancient burial ground

  in the world.

  You've got a point.

  And it's a nice summary.

  Audience friends, do you know

  what "dianzi"

  means here?

And it is also today's question.

Learn Chinese and make friends everywhere.
