  Learn Chinese with fun.

It's a lot easier to remember.

Hi there! Welcome to this edition

  of Happy China.

I am the happy Han Jia.

And I am your good friend, Daniel.

You want to know where we are going

on the mountain this early morning?

We'd like to keep it secret for now.

Actually there is nothing to keep secret.

We are going to see the Wannian Temple.

  Let's go.

Now I formally announce the result of

  the step climbing contest.

  Daniel won a complete victory.

  Dà huò quán shèng

  to win an undeniable victory

  Don't be happy so early.

You must answer my question first

  before I recognize your victory.

  Oh, okay. Go ahead.

As Mt. Emei is one of China's four

  famous Buddhist mountains,

do you know which Bodhisattva is

  enshrined here?

  About this?

  You don't know?

Let the Wannian Temple tell you.

Han Jia, we've been to many

  temples already.

Why do we have to climb the mountain

  in this early morning?

  There are reasons of course.

First, Wannian Temple is the biggest

  temple on Mt. Emei.

With a history of 1,600 years,

it is a truly very old Buddhist temple.

  Let me assure you

you won't take the trip for nothing.

  Okay. Han Jia, look.

It is written with the name, Ancient Baishui

Temple. Why is it called differently?

  To answer this question,

I have to explain how many times

  the temple has been renamed.

  As Bodhisattva Puxian (Universal

  Benevolence) is enshrined here,

it was first called the Puxian Temple.

When it was rebuilt in the Tang Dynasty,

  it was renamed Baishui Temple.

Well, you've made a slip of the tongue.

What? Did I say anything wrong?

Did you ask me just now

  which Bodhisattva is enshrined here?

Now I know it is Bodhisattva Puxian

  who is enshrined here.

  You are so quick-witted.

Then why was it later renamed

  Wannian Temple?

Hòu lái zhè li wèi shénme gǎi míng jiào wàn nián sì ne?

Why was it renamed Wannian Temple?

When the temple was rebuilt in

  the Ming Dynasty,

  Emperor Shenzong was coincidently

  celebrating his mother's 70th birthday.

Thus he designated the temple as

  Shengshou Wannian Temple, or

  Wannian Temple for short.

  It's such a complicated story.

Han Jia, it isn't easy for you to remember

  all this so clearly.

No wonder you are known as

  Walking Encyclopedia.

Oh, I read materials the whole night

last night. It wasn't easy for me.

Han Jia, why this building looks

  so strange?

  Strange?

  Yeah, it doesn't look like

a structure of a Chinese Buddhist

  temple at all.

  Let me tell you

this is the "xia er wen ming" beamless

  brick hall.

Does "xia er wen ming" mean to

  be known far and wide?

  韩佳:对。遐呢,就是指远;

Yes. "xia" means to be far

and "er" refers to vicinity, or near.

"xia er wen ming" means well-known.

"xia", 2nd tone, means far and "er",

  3rd tone, means near.

So "xia er wen ming" means famous,

  far and near.

  "xia er wen ming".

  You are right.

The style of this beamless brick hall

  is indeed quite unusual.

It was designed in imitation of an

  Indian temple.

In shape, it is round in the upper part

and and square in the lower part,

  symbolizing that the heaven was

round and the earth was square.

When was this beamless brick hall built?

In the Ming Dynasty, over 400

  years ago.

  There have been numerous earthquakes

  and fires,

that have caused damage of different

degrees to all the buildings here

  except the brick hall.

This is simply a miracle in the history

  of architecture.

Zhè jiǎn zhí jiù shì jiàn zhù shǐ shàng de qí jì.

This is nothing short of a miracle

  in the history of architecture.

Let me make it clear that seeing

  this brick hall

was the second reason for our visit

  to Wanning Temple today.

Oh, it was a valid reason.

Han Jia, what we saw just now

  was probably

the copper statue of Bodhisattva Puxian.

Yes. It is the most precious relic

  of Wannian Temple.

And of couse, it is also the third reason

for us to visit this temple.

This statue of Puxian, which was

made in the Northern Song Dynasty,

is 7.8 meters tall and weighs 62 tons.

It was cast completely in pure copper.

  But no one knows

how it was moved up to the mountain.

that they cast the statue right on

  the mountain?

But in the Mt. Emei area, there haven't been

any historical finds proving the existence

  of casting Buddha statues.

Is it possible that the various parts of

the statue were cast at the foothill

and then they were carried up the mountain

and welded together on the mountain?

  But many people doubt

  whether the welding technique

  and transport

means at that time had reached that level.

  No conclusion in either case.

  This is indeed a riddle.

  But I believe that

sooner or later this riddle will

  be resolved.

  Viewer friends,

resolving this riddle will take time.

  With this riddle in mind,

let's watch today's Feast for the Eyes.

Mt. Emei is one of the four mountains

  of Buddhism in China.

Bodhisattva Puxian is enshrined right here.

The beamless brick hall has a history

  of over 1,000 years.

The copper statue of Puxian seems to be

  recounting a centuries-old story.

The ancient temple displays its eternal charm.

  Viewer friends,

after the Feast for the Eyes,

now it's time for today's Happy Quiz.

  Today's question will be given

  from me.

  Listen carefully. The question is

  like this.

  Wait a minute.

  Don't forget our motto-

  Oh, yes.

Learn Chinese and have friends everywhere.
