At 6:05pm on October the 24th, 2007, the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre shook to a massive roar, as a Long March 3A rocket blasted off into space. Chang'e-1, China's first lunar probe, was beginning its long journey to the Moon. In the command centre at the launch site, staff were nervously monitoring the data from the craft. An old man wearing glasses was staring intently at three big screens in front of him. He was Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist of China’s lunar exploration programme. In his heart, he was keeping an appointment he had made 30 years before.
