Dialogue 09/08/14 Camels face massacre in Australia

Hello, I am Yang Rui with Dialogue and live in Beijing. Aussies will declare war on thousands of innocent lives in their Outback. But camels are described as havoc-wreaking creatures in Australia, competing with cattle and sheep for water and food, trampling vegetation, tearing apart bathrooms of local residents and on a number of occasions, invading remote settlements, leaving behind them a wasteland.

Such a witch-hunting media campaign aims to slash the camel population by two-thirds. Animal rights groups are worried about the serial killings. Taunting rhetoric could be heard in American media. The massacre is likely to occur after thousands of kangaroos have been shot in yet another campaign to keep the alleged eco-equilibrium.

Questions are being asked as to how and why the superior human race can kill poultry, pigs and cattle for burgers and dishes on the table without raising any moral questions? Conservationists are wondering aloud if birth control and camel farming are a good alternative to the camel reduction dilemma? Today we are joined here live by Professor Xie Yan, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Dr. Victor Gao Zhikai. In a few minutes, we shall talk to Mr. Rowan Callick, Asia-Pacific editor of the Australian in Melbourne.
