The young Japanese and the local media are both wowed by President Hu’s pingpong diplomacy in the Waseda University during his just concluded five-day official visit to Japan. This charm diplomatic campaign is the first of its kind in ten years for a Chinese president due to the historical rivalry. But it seems both Tokyo and Beijing stand ready to shake hands and adopt a forward-looking attitude in forging a mutually beneficially strategic partnership.
With the strong push by senior politicians on both sides, there has been progress over the most sensitive issue of the gas exploration in the East China Sea. But one cannot expect the frosty mistrust to evaporate overnight since there have been a lot more key stakes to resolve.
