Intro:

No one expects the current visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao to Japan will achieve any breakthroughs, but this trip, the first of its kind in ten years, looks set to bring the difficult bilateral ties to a historic new high.

The US says that it is good to see the relaxation of the strained political ties for the regional security and stability. But, can both sides make concessions over the disputes in the East China Sea?

Recent Japanese surveys show that the approval rating on China is very gloomy over the incident of poisoned dumplings. But President Hu Jintao has promised to loan two giant pandas to cheer the Japanese up a little bit. Such friendly gestures may have been fully reflected in the 4th joint declaration between the two governments, which have been locked up in mistrust if not animosity over the Yasukuni issue.
