Fighting corruption has become an absolute top priority for the Chinese authorities, as one senior government official after another fell disgracefully in recent years. But instead of relying on an independent judiciary, the ruling party depends on self-regulation through disciplinary inspections. This year, it seems the emphasis of the crackdown campaign will be placed on business bribery. But can the current penalties be sufficiently carried out to eliminate rampant malfeasance within the party?
