Hunan province, is the birthplace of late Chairman Mao, one of the founders of New China. The province in central China was also home to famed painter Qi Baishi. Hunan's exceptional settings and fertile soils, fed by the Yangtze River have helped to produce a rich artistic tradition. An exhibition which captures essential artistic achievements of Hunan opened at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing on Wednesday. The exhibition covers works painted over the past three decades.

The exhibition of Hunan Fine Arts occupies five halls of the National Museum of Fine Arts. In the largest of them, the Central hall are works ranging from oils, water colors, ink brush paintings, and prints. The exhibition presents fine examples of sculptures, setting off the exemplary works on canvass.
There are more than three hundred works. They represent the work of more than two hundred and fifty painters native to Hunan. A larger exhibition of work was held during summer, in Changsha, the capital of Hunan.
The exhibits were chosen from over three thousand art works submitted to an organizing committee for the two programs. The Hunan provincial government, is one of the sponsoring agencies for the showings. The paintings serve as a means to create broader awareness of Hunan, its art, its landscapes and its rich cultural traditions.
