An Australian country town has had a spiritual reawakening relating to Art. The town is trying to shake off its unshakeable association with the toilet. So the town of Dunedoo is rebranding itself, as a destination of artistic refinement. The transformation had its stormy beginning in the New South Wales town, when the local council announced plans to install a huge sculpture of an outdoor toilet, or dunny, as a welcoming sight for weary travelers on their journeys.

Australian towns favor gigantic sculptures representing local icons.

For many in the community of Dunedoo - an immense toilet seemed like a natural - playing off the Australian slang expression for an outdoor toilet.

The "The Big Dunny" plan commenced seven years ago.

But many in the community objected to the portrayal of the community through toilet humor. Discommoded residents of the town launched a protest.

The council relented and imported a former events manager from Sydney to re-brand Duneydoo as a centerpiece of artistic sensibility.

So instead of a being greeted by an oversized toilet, visitors to Dunedoo are welcomed by an immense sculpture of a pencil, reminding travelers there is culture here.
