The Ballet "Anna Karenina", based on Russian writer Leo Tolstoy's masterpiece novel, will be staged next week. Badisches Staatstheater from Germany is to perform.

The show debuted in Germany at the European Cultural Festival in 2006 and was labeled a smashing success.

The ballet emphasizes four characters of the novel. It following the main theme of Anna's struggle with forbidden feelings and restrictions imposed by her society. The ballet is being termed a "scenic

psychoanalysis." It portraying the heroine's descent into despair and suicide because of a tragic love triangle and irreconcilable conflicts between her roles as mother, wife and lover. The dance solo of the lead ballerina earned critical acclaim as a touching piece.

"Anna Karenina" plays at the Shanghai Grand Theater from next Friday to Sunday. The performances are part of the Shanghai International Art Festival.
