An exhibition of the Belgian cartoon characters the Smurfs are on display in Brussels to mark the 50th anniversary of their first comic book appearance.
The little blue figures with white hats were created by Peyo, a pseudonym for the Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford. They were first published in comic strip form in October 1958.
The cartoons went on to become wildly popular around the world.
The Smurfs on display in Brussels have been adapted and designed by a variety of celebrities from across Europe. Designers include a German footballer, an Italian fashion house designer and the Asterix cartoonist.
The figures will be sold at a benefit auction for the United Nations children's agency UNICEF.
Veronique Culliford, Smurf Creator's Daughter, said, "We have decided for the fiftieth anniversary to share the Smurfs' success with less fortunate children. That is why we are cooperating with UNICEF. The Smurfs already sold across European cities will benefit UNICEF while the celebrity-decorated white figurines will be sold at a benefit auction on October 23 with all revenues going to UNICEF."
As part of their 50th anniversary, The Smurfs have been supporting UNICEF with a design competition and a fund-raising auction. These festivities mark the end of the anniversary celebrations.
