Metallic strips, hooks, beads and plastic all appear as unlikely materials for designer clothing. But there it is, a collection of 20th Century avant-garde fashion at Christie's Auction House in New York. The unusual styles include a Paco Rabanne metal wedding dress. There's a Pierre Cardin bubble cape circa 1965. It comes in red "wet look' plastic. Then back comes Paco Rabanne with another dress made from acrylic strips, in tangerine.
Designers like Emilio Pucci, YSL and Gianni Versace are all part of the collection.
Fabrics include metal, nylon, lurex and rubber. They are representative artifacts of an era that began in the 1950's, when youth, modernity and revolutionary styles were celebrated.
This tailored, architecturally minimalist collection belongs to Mark Haddawy and Katy Rodriguez. It represents their efforts over twenty years, globetrotting to acquire the historic oddities.
