| London's Olympic Games Organizing Committee announces plans for a four year cultural extravaganza, setting the stage for the 2012 London Olympiad. |
The cultural Olympiad is to be launched over the weekend of September 26-28. It's inspired by the vision of the founder of the modern Olympic movement Pierre de Coubertin to celebrate Olympic ideals from the cultural perspective.
More than 500 events will launch the Open Weekend program. More than 160 organizations are working on plans for events all over the country, to see or participate in things that normally take place behind the scenes. The weekend is designed to give people a preview of the depth of talent and creativity Britain has to offer.
Ten major projects will follow in the next four years. Each is aimed to fulfilling a commitment that the London 2012 Games will involve and inspire people in Britain and around the world.
Over 40 million pounds or about 72 million U.S. dollars have already been earmarked for cultural activities.
