Special Report:   2008 Beijing Olympic Games

Beijing has many folk craftsmen whose standards of artistry surpass all others. Their skills have come to them through their families and are passed down, generation by generation. Tuesday, two hundred of these families were designated as "Olympic folk art families." The honour comes with an invitation that the families welcome visitors during the games and show the world their exemplary works.

The two hundred art families were chosen at the completion of a three year selection. All of those selected achieved previous renown in their arts.

The two hundred art families were chosen at the completion of a three year selection. All of those selected achieved previous renown in their arts. There's Clapper Talk Liu and Diabolo Zhang. During the Olympics, these accomplished folk artists will provide free public programs or receive visitors to their homes free of charge.

Bai Dacheng, who lives near Houhai, is a bristle figurine maker. As Bai Dacheng taps a plate, her costumed figures actually move. The craft has all but died out in the present day and lives on only in Bai's family.

Tong Xiufen has been a master of Peking opera facial art for three decades. She will showcase her art for Olympic visitors and even offer tutoring for those who'd like to learn.

Many of the folk art families are dotted around the Houhai area of central Beijing. While you are visiting the extensive man made lakes at Houhai you can ask rickshaw drivers to take you to visit the folk artists.
