The 43rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has kicked off in the western Czech spa. The festival presented its highest ward to U.S. screen legend Robert De Niro. De Niro received the Crystal Globe award for his outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema during the festival's opening ceremony.
To honour the star of "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver", the festival officially opened with "What Just Happened". The film stars de Niro and Bruce Willis and was produced and directed by Barry Levinson. It's about a Hollywood producer struggling to make a new film.
Actors Danny Glover and Christopher Lee were also honored at Karlovy Vary. They were given the Festival President's Award for actors, directors and producers who have contributed fundamentally, to the development of film.
Karlovy Vary is the premiere Eastern European film festival. Its 2008 edition offers a traditionally wide-ranging program. More than 220 films are on the bill, including a couple of dozen shorts.
A seven-member jury picks this Crystal Globe Awards, from the 14 mostly European films in the main competition.
Karlovy Vary is the first international film festival of the Czech Republic. It's also one of the oldest film festivals in the world. The event was established in 1946, the same year the Cannes Film Festival was founded. The Karlovy Vary event is held every two years between June and July.
