153 big screen productions entered this year's festival competition. All were produced over the past two years. All did exceptionally well at the box-office. After a preliminary round of screenings, 37 films were judged to be the best and were moved into the final round of competition. Some pretty big names are in there, smash hits like The Warlords and The Knot. The festival awards 12 major honours, including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best New Actorand Actress.
In parallel with the main festival is an exhibition of movies with rural themes. The aim is to reflect the rapid changes in China's countryside over three decades since the adoption of reform and "opening up." There are some landmark productions about China's quickly changing rural perspective on view.
