Yangge dance can often be seen in China's rural areas. The first ever China Yangge Dance Festival opened on Thursday in Jiaozhou, near Qingdao, gathering Yangge dancers from around the country.
Eighteen Yangge dance troupes descended on the city to show off their specialties. Among the types performed during the opening ceremony were Huagu Dance from Anhui, Ansai Drum Dance from Shaanxi, Yangge from northeastern China and stilt performing from Haicheng.
Jiaozhou Yangge, a renowned tradition in Shandong, has a history of three hundred years. It's famous for its varied and graceful moves. The town of Jiaozhou has held two previous Yangge Dance Festivals before and the China Yangge Dance Festival is a larger version of it. The China Yangge Festival will be held once every two years.
