Film making is experiencing a renaissance in Nicaragua. After years of virtually no films being made, local independent directors have begun making films for domestic audiences. But these homegrown - low budget films - must still compete against Hollywood blockbusters.

Nicaragua's film industry has been experiencing tough times.

Inside the National Film Institute, many of the country's old films are collecting dust.

The institute has been making an effort to digitize many of the films. But lack of money is slowing the efforts.

In the 1980s, film making in Nicaragua experienced a boom. But since then, things have taken a turn for the worse.

The director of the Nicaraguan film institute, Marcio Vargas, says money is needed from foreign investors.

But there has been a glimmer of hope on the horizon for the Nicaraguan movie business.

Local film makers have begun producing low budget films -- that may help to revive the fortunes of the industry.

Florence Jaugey, film director, said, "I believe that our budget (is comparable to) a day of filming for a Hollywood movie, or may be half a day and we shoot 6 weeks."

To save money, she employed unknown actors to star in her movie called "Yuma".
