The story of the "Journey to the West", a classic Chinese novel written centuries ago by Wu Cheng'en, has been popular among many generations of Chinese people. It tells the legendary, yet painstaking journey of Monk Tang and his disciples, who went to the west to acquire scriptures. Recently Monk Tang's travelling route is revealed in a photo exhibition.

The exhibition, in Northwest China's Xinjiang, is by photographer Din He. He vividly captured the scenes through his lens along the route that Monk Tang once traveled. The pictures take visitors back more than one-thousand years, when Monk Tang came across exotic cultures and experienced disparate customs. It took Shanghai photographer Ding 15 visits to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region over five years to complete the shooting.
