Special Report:   2008 Spring Festival

The merry-making atmosphere is bubbling up in China, as Chinese people get ready to celebrate Spring Festival in February.

 preparing for the big day.

It's the most important annual festival in China. Let's head for East China's Shandong Province and take a look at how people there are preparing for the big day.

The Chinese knot, braided and fastened with red ribbons to create unique patterns, is believed to be auspicious for prosperity in the new year. It is also a meaningful gift at family reunions. Tancheng county in Linyi, Shandong province is well known for tying Chinese knots. Over six thousand families spotted around seventy villages in the county are busy weaving Chinese knots all day long. Even with all this effort, the families can't satisfy the nationwide demand.

A lantern exhibition also adds to the new year colour in Linyi city. More than twenty thousand lanterns of various sizes and shapes are about to be revealed at an exhibition. One of the distinguishing factors is the emphasis on "Green". All the lanterns employ energy-saving light bulbs. Organizers say this will help awaken more public concern for environmental protection.
