He's called the "Paganini of the Viola:" Yuri Bashmet led his group, the "Moscow Soloists" in performance at Beijing's Poly Theater, Monday night. For lovers of classical music the performance by the maestro was a rare treat on Christmas eve.
It's the second time Russian viola player Yuri Bashmet has come to China. The first time was in 2000 at the Beijing Music Festival. Monday night's concert was the first time his name headlined the show. It was an evening that featured classic chamber pieces.
This is Bashmet playing Johannes Brahms' Adagio in B Minor, a tune composed for viola and strings. As the most renowned viola player in the world, Bashmet mesmerized the audience with his delicate, impressive interpretations. Bashmet is the only viola player to win a Grammy Award. For those who have enjoyed his renderings on CD, this was a cherished opportunity to watch the virtuoso play in live performance.
An audience said, "I bought an album of Bashmet over a decade ago. It was released by RCA in the States. On it were his performances of Shostakovich and Glinka. I have admired him very much. Today I'm very pleased to listen to him playing live. For me, it's the best treat for my Christmas eve."
