Last weekend there was an event in Taipei, not to honour the elderly but a celebration of the rites of the young.

It wasn't really an intimate gathering, as weddings go. In Taipei more than 100 couples said "I do" simultaneously. One hundred and twenty nine couples celebrated their big day together: walking down the aisle.

The couples stand side by side to kiss inside Taipei Stadium. They sway to the beat of slow music.

This is not a high school prom. It's a kissing contest and the whole event, mass wedding and all was staged by Tapei's city government.

Why would the city do that? Since 1973, Taipei's city government has hosted group weddings to discourage extravagant spending on traditional weddings. The idea is to promote stable family structure.

The event originally was scheduled for October 7th. But typhoon Krosa blew that away when it swept over the island. So the event was smaller than originally planned. More than 100 couples who were to take part in the event, couldn't wait. So they went ahead and got married and were already off on their honeymoon when the mass wedding got underway.
