A fair whose principal aim is to promote cultural exchange opens, as a major event at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival. The Performing Arts Fair kicked off at Shanghai Exhibition Center Tuesday. There's enthusiastic participation by international production companies. And there've been some remarkable contracts, emerging from this market platform for performance companies.

This year's event attracts thousands of performing agents and artists from 20 Chinese provinces and cities. Over 30 countries and regions are represented by companies from diverse places like Latvia and Morocco. It's their first time in Shanghai.

The first contract was signed on the first day. Shanghai Opera House will visit the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland. Shanghai will stage "Othello", "the Wager" and two more programs at the festival next July and August.

Cao Jianshen, assis. to dir., Shanghai Opera House, said, "All expenses will be paid by the Savonlinna festival. It's great that we will have Chinese opera performed in Europe."
