A vivid blue diamond ring that sold for 8 million U.S. dollars at Sotheby's Hong Kong autumn auction, Monday. It's the highest per-carat price ever paid for a gemstone sold at auction.

The glistening ring weighs 6.04 carats. The diamond is emerald cut, reserved for the world's purest diamonds.

The stone is the largest and rarest vivid blue diamond on offer since Sotheby's opened its Hong Kong auction in 2004. The last record set for a gemstone of similar carat weight stood for 20 years.
